Matching be still infinity tattoos on ankle and foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching tattoos show an infinity symbol with the words be still in flowing script and a small cross at the join, one on the inner ankle and one on the top of the foot. The linework is thin and black, with a few soft swirls and tails extending from the loop. The photograph is a close, natural-light view against a grey wooden deck, with the toes showing red nail polish.

Sit closer, and mind the goat, she thinks she owns the step. The road out past Tamsin Wells runs in a loop around the salt pan, and the old carriers say the surveyor who laid it could never stop tracing a figure eight in the dust with his boot. Ask for the road of the eight and they will point you round in circles and laugh.

Two sisters, Ada and Nell Pryor, ran a water cart on that loop. Ada was quick with the reins and quicker with her tongue. Nell was the one who sat still when the heat came down off the ridge. Every dusk they drove the circuit, and every dawn they woke where they had started, so Ada swore the road was a joke the land played on them. Nell only said, 'Be still and it brings you round.' They had the same mark inked onto their feet, a small cross at the crossing of the loop, so that whichever way the other wandered, they would know her track.
One summer Ada's axle snapped on the far bend and she walked off with the canteen under her arm. Nell stayed with the cart, as she had promised, and kept still through three days of shimmering heat, counting the tails of the loop where the wind had smoothed them. On the fourth morning Ada came back following the curling marks in the sand, and found Nell's cart exactly where she had left it, with the water untouched.
Now there is a brass cross bolted to the tank, and drivers who stop at the join swear the ground hums like a bell at dusk. So if you ever find yourself going round in circles, sit down in the dust and let the road bring you home. Mind the goat.
