Don't you look at the tide table, love, look at the dog. Moss went down to the slipway at Scarrow every evening the Wren was out, and he went the same way each time: out along the wet sand to the weed line, back up to the wall, then down again. Nobody taught him that. Tom Aske taught him to sit, and the sea taught him the rest.

The winter the Wren didn't come in, the whole harbour came down to watch him. Ada Pryor lit the lamp in the upstairs window of the chandlery, the one her father had hung for the herring boats, and she told the men it was for the boat. It was for the dog. Moss would not leave the wall. He walked his loop from water to wall and back, and the prints he left filled with seawater and dried into little dark stars on the stone.
In March the mist lifted before dawn and there was a sound of oars off the point. Moss went down the sand at a run, then stopped dead at the weed line and turned round. He came back up to the wall to fetch Ada, because he had never once in his life gone past where he was told to stop. She followed him down. Tom was standing in the shallows, soaked to the belt and laughing like a fool, with the dog's tracks running between them in a figure of eight.
Ada still says it was the dog who brought him home. Tom says it was the lamp. The prints washed off the slipway years ago, but Tom had a paw drawn on his own arm the spring after, and he rolls up his sleeve in the Scarrow Arms and taps it and says the sea only ever gives a man back to the one who keeps walking the sand.
