Matching infinity tattoos with letters on two pairs of feet

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two pairs of feet rest on a wooden floor, each carrying a black infinity symbol tattoo with small letters set along its loop. The linework is fine and even, with the letters spaced evenly around the curves and small dots between them. The tattoos are in black ink only, and the photo is taken from above, with the larger pair on the top of the foot and the smaller pair on the ankle.

The wire from Holyhead had been chattering since before the kettle boiled, and Mrs Pryce would not be told the office was closed for the evening. I sat at the key in the signal room above the harbour with my sister's chair pushed against the wall, where it had stood since March. Nell had taught me the loop code the summer we were twelve, drawing it in chalk on the back step: a figure of eight laid on its side, letters set along both curves, and a small stop between each one so the eye knew where to rest.

'You read it like a hymn,' she said. 'Round and round, and never the first word twice.' We sent our letters that way to each other from opposite ends of the coast, D then J then K then D again, until the message curled back on itself and began afresh. Nobody else on the circuit could make sense of it, which was the point. The clerks in the Admiralty office thought we were mad, and possibly we were.

Mrs Pryce's telegram concerned a cargo of slate that had not arrived. I tapped back a plain yes and a plain no, and then, because the loop had to be closed or it would not hold, I went round the figure of eight one last time with the letters Nell had left in the margin of her final message. O, R, N, A. The stop after each one was as sharp as a nail head.

Afterwards I walked down to the quay and watched the lamp at the end of the breakwater come on. It blinked its own short and long, as it always had, and I found I was counting the gaps between the flashes the way she had taught me, looking for the place where the pattern began again.
