Matching turtle tattoos on two feet
Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two small turtle tattoos sit on the tops of a pair of bare feet, one on each foot. Each turtle has a shell of interlocking black lines with a central pattern, and curled flourishes form the head, flippers and tail. The ink is solid black with fine grey shading, and the photograph is taken close up against a dark background.

The turtle had come up the shingle at low tide, the way they did in the week before the equinox, and Maud Arrowsmith knelt beside it with lamp oil still on her fingers. Its shell was the size of a tea tray, a lattice of black lines knotted like the net her father mended on the slipway. Two curled flippers, and a head turned toward the sea as if it had forgotten something out there.

Her brother Tom had sworn he would be back before the light was relit. He had taken the skiff out at dawn with a handful of hooks and a bottle of their mother's blackberry gin, and the wind had gone round to the north before noon. Maud climbed the tower and cleaned the lens, polishing each pane until her reflection came back small and wavering, then turned the brass until the beam swept the bay twice over.
On the third night a ferry crew shouted up from the landing that a skiff had washed onto the Carrick rocks, empty but for a wooden turtle wedged under the thwart. Maud went down to the boathouse and found its twin nailed beneath the eaves, where Tom had hidden it as a boy. They had cut the pair from driftwood the summer they were ten, and each had argued the other's shell was the better knotwork.
She carried the second one up the tower and set it on the sill beside the lamp. When the beam swept out over the water it threw the shadow of a shell across the waves, and she kept it turning until the dawn came grey and the sea gave nothing back but its own slow breathing.
