The owl had been sitting on the hazel branch since the first frost, and nobody in Thornwick Hollow could remember it leaving. Old Maud Pellow said it was the same owl her grandmother had fed scraps to, and that it kept count of the apples. Every evening it swivelled its round head to watch the cottage gate, where the miller's girl came up the lane with a basket on her arm and a question she had been carrying all week.

Her name was Ada, and her brother had gone over the wall into the orchard of the Squire's house three nights running and not come home. The Squire's dogs were loose. The lantern light in the big house burned until dawn. Ada did not want to go over the wall herself, but she knew the orchard had a gap by the pear tree, and she knew the owl had seen it.
She stood under the branch and asked. The owl did not answer in words. It lifted one wing, slow as a page turning, and then it flew down the lane ahead of her, low over the hedges, and waited on each gatepost until she caught up.
By the pear tree the dogs were silent, curled in the straw of their kennel. Her brother sat under the branches with his boots off, eating a stolen pear and laughing at nothing. He looked up and saw the owl perched above him, and he stopped laughing. The owl blinked once. They walked home together by the lane, and the owl came too, and when they reached the gate it turned its head toward the orchard one last time and settled back on its branch as if it had never left.
