Matching cat tattoos on the feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two small black cat outlines sit on the inner sides of a pair of raised feet, facing each other as a matching pair. The linework is thin and clean, with minimal shading, and the cats are simple, outlined silhouettes. The photograph is in black and white against a background of shelves and boxes, with the feet filling the centre of the frame.

Now then, sit close, because the wind off the Humber gets into old canvas and I'll not be talked over by it. Forty winters back, Harrow's Travelling Marvels had two cats that did the rope. Mab was the black one with the torn ear, and her brother Tobin was the one who could never sit still. They went up together under a pale blue spotlight, and the ringmaster, a man called Lionel Pike who smelled of peppermint and rain, swore they were the only honest things in the whole tent.

The show died the way shows do, slowly and then all at once. The big top was sold for its poles. The lions went to a zoo in Kent. Pike drank his wages, then the company's, and one wet morning in Hull the caravans would not start. Mab would not climb the rope without her brother below her, and Tobin would not go anywhere out of her sight. So the pair of them sat on the step of the last wagon, facing each other across a hand's width of wet boards, waiting for somebody to come with a key.
Nobody came with a key. What came instead was a girl from the shelter with a cardboard box and a tin of cream. She counted the cats twice, laughed, and said they looked like they were trying to balance a plate between them. Pike never saw either of them again, and the rigging rusted where it hung.
So when you see two cats sitting nose to nose across a little gap, don't hurry past. They're still doing the act. Somebody just has to keep the gap steady.
