Two cats on the tops of feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two small cats are drawn in black outline on the tops of two bare feet, pressed together at the toes. The cat on the left is plain and sits with its tail curled up, while the cat on the right has striped shading along its back and tail. The linework is thin and even, the ink is solid black, and the pale background of the skin and a blurred bookshelf keep the focus on the tattoos.

The bookbinder on Crane Lane kept two cats, and neither would sleep unless the other was near enough to touch. Mab was the plain one, grey as sacking, with a tail she curled up like a question whenever she was pleased with herself. Tom was striped the way the parish ledgers were ruled, bars down his back and bars down his tail, and he had opinions about the paste pot that Mab did not share.

The river came up in the second week of February. By the Thursday the lane was a brown sheet, and the cats had been shut in the press room on the top shelf with the drying boards and the spare thread. Tom wanted to go down. Mab sat on his tail and would not move, so he stayed, grumbling, and the two of them watched the water climb the door frame one inch at a time.
On the third night they moved to the windowsill, where the stone was narrow and there was room for only one of them to sit comfortably. They sat anyway, shoulder to shoulder, and when Tom stretched his back legs out, his toes met Mab's across the gap and stayed there.
Edith Hale came up the stairs on the fourth morning with a lantern and counted two cats where she had left two. She found them exactly as they had been, paws tucked, toes pressed together. She did not part them. She took down the flood-stained register of baptisms, pressed its loose pages flat, and stitched a new spine for it, and on the last page of the binding she left two small paw prints in soft ink, side by side.
