By the end of August the windfalls have started to split on the grass under the Calloway's Pippin, and you can smell them from the yard gate. You sit on the wall with your back against the lichened stone, watching the two grey tabbies who own this orchard pretend they do not know each other. Tansy is the older one, with a torn ear and a habit of sleeping in the wheelbarrow. Hob is younger and stupid about birds.

Every evening the pair of them go round the trees in opposite directions, Tansy clockwise past the hives, Hob anticlockwise past the cold frames, and every evening they meet at the gap where the old wall stops and the new hedge begins. They never stay long. Tansy lifts one paw and taps the stone. Hob flicks the tip of his tail, as though that settles something between them that nobody else could follow.

One dry night the farmer's wife says the lorry is coming for the fruit in the morning and the cats must be shut in the barn. You carry Hob across the yard under your coat while Tansy yowls at the door until the light comes up. When the lorry has gone you go looking, and she is already sitting in the gap, tail wrapped round her feet, staring up the lane.

Hob comes through the hedge at dusk, thin and burred with thistle, having chewed a loose board free of the barn. He walks straight to her without a sound. They press their flanks together against the warm stone, two cats drawn in one line, and neither of them looks at you. Leave them be. The apples will come down without you, and the wall will keep the pair of them.
