Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand shows a small solid black semicolon tattooed on the inner wrist, close to the wrist crease. The mark is simple and crisp, with dense black ink and no shading. The photograph is black and white, with the fingers at the top of the frame and a textured stone surface behind the wrist.

The last caravan of Dunmore's Travelling Marvels had been sitting in a field outside Carrow since the spring, and the field had begun to forget it was a field. Mrs Ada Pell, who kept the books and the bearded lady's spare teeth in the same tin, said the show was finished. The ringmaster, Tobias Vane, said nothing. Each morning he walked out to the big top with a pot of ink and a brush no thicker than a hair.

The villagers came to watch him paint. He did not paint the posters or the horses. He painted a small mark on the boards of every wagon: a dot, and beneath it a curl, like a comma that had been told to wait. Ada asked him what it meant. He said a sentence can stop with a full stop, and then it is over, but this company had only paused between two lines.
All through the summer he worked. The wheels turned a little, then a little more. A boy from the village, Sam Harrow, who had never seen a lion, carried the buckets and asked when the show would start. Tobias told him the next word was already written, somewhere the ink had not yet dried.
In October the company rolled out of Carrow with the marks still wet on every board. Ada counted the wagons twice, as she always did, and found them all there. Sam stayed behind at the gate of the empty field and found a single dot of black on the post, where the brush had been tested, and he sat down beside it to wait for the rest of the sentence.
