Three small birds on the wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Three small black bird silhouettes sit in a diagonal line across the inner wrist, each shown in flight. The linework is fine and solid, with little shading, and the birds are at slightly different angles. The photograph is black and white with a shallow depth of field, so the background and the second arm at the upper right are soft and out of focus.

The snow had shut the Hollin Pass for four days, and the Crown at the top of it had run out of everything except candles and bad tea. Dora Vane stood at the kitchen door with a tray of cold toast, watching the yard fill again with white. Behind her, the stranger from room six was asking for paper.

"Only the back of something, if you have it," he said, so she gave him the carbon from the coal book because it was the only paper left. He drew with a stub of pencil, quick and careless, three marks that flicked off the edge like sparks. "Rooks," he said. "I saw them this morning, going down the valley before the cloud came in. Three of them, not quite together."
Dora asked why he had drawn three when a flock was a hundred or more. He shrugged and said that was the number he could keep in his head while he walked. Then the wind dropped, and the light came up off the snow so hard the window went silver, and in the yard the rooks lifted from the wall, three of them, a little out of line.
She pinned the drawing under the bar clock, where it stayed when the road opened on Thursday and the man went down the hill with his collar up. Nobody ever asked whose birds they were. Dora kept the coal book, and every winter after, she left the top corner blank for the ones that flew over.
