Matching circle symbol tattoos on two wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are held side by side, each showing a small outlined circle with two short slanted strokes inside, placed on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the photograph is in black and white. The circles are centred on the wrists against a plain, dark background, with the matching designs placed at the same height on each arm.

The lock at Dunmere has carried the same gate-mark since 1911, a ring with two slanted bars cut into the balance beam. Dad said it meant the water was level and a boat could go through. Nell and I learned to read it before we learned to swim, and nobody else in the valley knew what it stood for, which suited us fine.

The Board's letter came in March. Dunmere would be automated by autumn and the cottage let to a man from Stockport who wanted a holiday home. We sat on the lock side with a flask between us, and Nell turned her wrist over and said, 'Well, we'll have to take it with us.' She had a biro in her coat pocket. She drew the circle on my wrist first, pressing hard so the ink caught the blue of my veins, and then I did hers, my hand unsteady, the bars too long.

The next morning a narrowboat came down from the summit with a couple from Bristol and a spaniel asleep on the roof. They asked the way to the next lock. Nell lifted the paddle without a word, the water dropped, the boat sank slowly beneath the coping, and the mark on her wrist caught the light as she leaned on the windlass.

Autumn came. The automatic gear hummed in the empty hut and the gates closed themselves, slow and exact. I drove up the valley with the window down. At the bridge I lifted my hand off the wheel and glanced at my wrist, and the circle was still there, level as anything.
