X and O with heart wrist tattoos

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two inner wrists are shown side by side, each with a small tattoo pairing a serif letter with a solid black heart. The left wrist carries an X and the right an O, both set in a thin, classic serif face with fine strokes. The ink is solid black on fair skin against a soft, slightly vignetted background, with the tattoos placed near the centre of each wrist.

The notes came up in the pay packet every second Friday, folded small between the coupons and the rent book, always signed with the same two marks. Mam pretended she never saw them. I kept them in a Jacob's biscuit tin under the stairs, where the coal dust found its way into everything, paper included.

Hollin Bank had one shop, one chapel and one pit, and everyone knew whose hand was whose. Walter Dunn wrote in pencil, pressing so hard the words came through on the back. He signed with an X for a kiss, because his mother had taught him that, and an O for the hug he could never manage in front of his mates at the baths. The hearts he drew himself, solid and black, filled in so carefully the nib split twice on the schoolmaster's pen he had borrowed and never returned.

In March the roof came down at the east face and the notes stopped. For three weeks I left the pay packets unopened on the mantel, as if paper could carry on without him. On the fourth Friday there was one fold in the envelope, pencil pressed through, and no X and no O. Just a heart, and beneath it my name spelled the way he always spelled it wrong, with the extra L he insisted was Welsh.

I pinned it to the chapel board beside the names of the men, where the lamp light catches the glass. Nobody asked me why I stood there so long. The heart was the only thing on the page that still looked finished.
