Matching circular script tattoos on forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists and forearms are pressed together, each carrying part of a circular line of cursive script that reads Follow me and I'll follow you. A small outlined bird sits at the centre of the circle, and the two tattoos join to form a complete ring. The linework is thin and dark black, with no shading or colour, and the photograph is taken close up against a blurred indoor background.

Our Eddie, I am writing this at the scrubbed table with the kettle ticking and your cap still on its nail, because Mam says you will not be home before Thursday and she will not have it put away. The canary is back in his cage by the window. Dai Morgan brought him up from the lamp room on Tuesday, fat and sulking, and he has sung ever since as if the seam had never gone quiet.

You will remember what you said the night before you went down the first time, sitting on the coal bunker with our boots off. If the bird stops singing, you said, follow him up the drift. Don't run, and don't argue with the dust. I laughed at you. The words have been going round in my head all week like the ring Mrs Pryce had me stitch on my sampler: follow me, I'll follow you. We were always going to follow each other, weren't we, you in front with the lamp and me a yard behind, scolding.
Today the overman came to the door with his hat in his hands. There was a roof fall in the east heading. Nobody lost, only Hughie Beech with his arm bent the wrong way. He asked after you particularly. I told him you were sensible and on days, and that I had no call to fret. Then I came back in and looked at the bird, and he was singing so hard his whole body shook.
So I am sending this with the Friday post, and I am asking you plainly to come up when the bird tells you. Mind the tin sheet by the pump. Eat the bread Mam packed, crusts and all. Write and say you have seen daylight. Your loving sister, Nell.
P.S. I have copied the words round a little bird on the back of this page, the way you used to draw him for me when we were small. Wind it round your wrist and follow it home.
