Matching circular script forearm tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are pressed together, with matching tattoos on each. A phrase in cursive script runs around a circle, with a small outlined motif in the centre that resembles a bird or leaf. The linework is fine and black, with no shading or colour, and the close crop keeps the focus on the tattoos and the hands holding them.

The fog came off the Wash so thick that Dora could not see the bow of her own boat, only the rope in her fist and the dark shape of her brother's back ahead of her, bent over the oars and muttering the old game under his breath.

They had invented it as children on the mudflats at Snettisham. One walked, the other followed in exactly the same footprints, and the one in front had to call the words back over a shoulder. Follow me. I'll follow you. They had gone round the rim of a tide pool like that until someone slipped and went in. The summer their mother died, they had the words inked round their wrists, two matching rings with a gull at the centre, because gulls were the only thing on the harbour that never seemed to leave.

Tonight Jem had the lead, and his voice came back thinner each time. Dora heard the shingle before she saw it, a grinding under the hull like teeth. She called the phrase to him as a question, the way you would call a dog home, and he turned the boat by the sound of her voice. Each time she answered, the bell buoy seemed to slide a little further to the left, and she kept saying it anyway.

They grounded at the slipway as the light came up grey. Their forearms were still pressed together on the gunwale where they had gripped each other's wrists through the crossing. In the hard morning light the two rings had blurred into one dark smudge, and neither of them could say anymore whose gull was whose.
