Matching coordinate tattoos on hips
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two people sit side by side in striped and patterned bikini bottoms, each with a small tattoo of two lines of numbers and compass letters on the upper hip. The text is set in a plain black sans-serif style with crisp, even linework and no shading. The skin tones are warm, a red cup is held in the top of the frame, and the composition is a close crop centred on the two tattoos.

The ferryman would not take the girls past the skerry until they had the numbers by heart. He wrote them on a slate with a stub of chalk, fifty-five, eight, nought, then six, forty, nought, and said that was where the sea went flat as a plate and the gulls gave up following the boats. Mairead thought it was the sort of thing grown men said to keep children close to shore.

Nell could not sit still in the stern. She had a tin cup of cold tea wedged between her knees and kept squinting at the headland as though it might rearrange itself. Mairead said that if they got lost, her mother would skin them both. Nell said that was exactly why they had to find the place first and get back before supper.
They found it at slack water, a patch of glass with nothing on it but a single shag drying its wings on a ledge. Nothing rang and no drowned town rose up under the hull. Mairead felt foolish until she saw Nell bent double over the gunwale, laughing, because their two reflections had come up out of the water looking exactly as they had at the start of the morning.
That night they sat on the slipway while old Donal pricked the numbers into their skin with a needle and a pot of soot ink, one line each, so neither could drift off on the water without the other knowing the way home. The ink was still bright when the tide came in. Donal looked at it for a long while, then nodded once and did not write anything down.
