Matching small symbols on three wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three hands are held together, each wrist showing a small, simple symbol drawn in thin black linework that resembles a short curve with a mark. The tattoos are placed at a similar point on each wrist and appear to be matching designs. The black and white photograph is taken from above, with a shop shelf blurred in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lock at Hollin Weir took its time filling, and Nell used the wait the way her grandfather had taught her, by checking every knot on the mooring lines. Her cousins sat on the coal hatch arguing about whether the swans on the far bank were the same pair that had nested in April. Nobody argued about the mark. It had belonged to the three of them since the summer they were eleven, when they pricked the same small hook into their wrists with a sewing needle and a bottle of ink bought from the chandler in Ashby Lock.

The mark copied the iron ring the lock-keeper hung on the gate when a boat was waiting, a short curve with a tick at its end. Their grandfather had said it meant come through and don't look back, which was the kind of thing he said when he had decided not to explain. Ivy wanted to sell the barge to a man from Leeds who had offered more than it was worth. Tam wanted one more winter on the water. Nell wanted to be asked.

The gates groaned open and water spilled over the sill in a white rope. Ivy stood up on the hatch, looked at the two of them, and held out her wrist without a word. Tam caught it, then Nell, and the three marks sat side by side in the grey light like punctuation nobody had finished writing.

The barge slid forward into the wider reach, and Nell felt the current take the hull the way it always did, patient and certain. We'll decide at Dunmere, Ivy said. Nobody let go until the keeper's bell rang twice behind them.
