Matching sun tattoos on two ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

Two torsos are shown side by side, each with a black outline tattoo of a sun with a starburst of pointed rays around a plain circle. A small symbol sits beside each sun, the one on the left a small square mark and the one on the right three wavy lines. The ink is crisp and even on warm skin, and both people wear bandeau tops against a dark background.

The sun wouldn't sit straight in the tin, so Hester Vail filed the rays a second time, grumbling that a starburst ought to look like it was shouting, not apologising. The chandler had given her a week's worth of scrap brass for the job. Across the bench Arnold Fitch pretended not to watch, his square-cut punch laid out beside three neat wave marks he had cut that morning.

The commission came from the Penhallow sisters, who had quarrelled for a whole winter over the lease of a fishing boat and then, to everyone's surprise, asked for the same badge. Hester thought it a bad sign. Two people wanting identical things was how feuds began in Mousehole. Arnold only said the sea had never once asked anybody's permission before it took a boat, and that a sun could be given twice without running out.

They came in on a Tuesday with rain still on their coats. Hester pressed the pattern into soft lead and watched them compare the rays with their fingers, counting under their breath. The elder found a dent in the disc and laughed. The younger said nothing, only turned the stamp over in her palm until the wave marks lined up beside the little square, as if she had always known where it belonged.

Hester kept the spare lead cast, a dull grey sun with one ray bent, and pinned it above the bench where noon light came through the window and threw a shadow on the wall exactly as wide as a child's hand.
