Matching diamond outline tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two inner forearms are pressed together, each showing a diamond drawn as a thin outline with internal facet lines. The left diamond is in black ink and the right is in teal-blue ink, and both are sharp and evenly weighted. The skin is softly lit against a blurred blue-green background, with the hands visible at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The marquee smells of cut grass and warm prosecco, and your aunt Marian is already pointing at the two of you across the top table as if she invented the pair of you. You promised her in March you'd make the speech. You meant it, right up until she slid a velvet box along the tablecloth and said, not quietly enough, that it was time.

Inside, on faded blue velvet, sit two small stones. One is clear as a dropped sweet wrapper held to the sun. The other has a faint green cast, like pond water in a jam jar. Your grandfather bought them in 1974 from a man in Hatton Garden who swore they were a matched pair, one for each of his daughters. Marian's mother got the clear one. Nobody ever checked the second. You turn the green one under the fairy lights and wonder how many years a thing can be wrong before it becomes the right thing.

You stand up anyway. You say something about inheritance and bad arithmetic and how the family has always preferred a story to a receipt. People laugh in the right places. Then you hold up the box and say the two of you will take both stones to a jeweller in Sheffield on Monday, to have them set into bands that don't match, because you would rather wear something honest than something that looks like it was planned.

Later, the lights are off and the caterers are stacking chairs. Your sister, who sat through the whole speech with her chin in her hand, leans over and holds her forearm against yours, the two of you pressed together like a pair of bookends. Her little line-drawn gem is black ink, yours is teal, and neither of you has ever once been able to say which of you got the better stone.
