Matching triangle and circle wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two people hold hands, and each wrist shows an identical small tattoo of a triangle enclosing a circle with a single vertical or diagonal line through it. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink with no shading. The tattoos sit centred on the inner wrists against plain skin, with a white lace fabric on the left and a soft pink dress on the right.

Dear Marjorie, the rain has not let up since Thursday, and the stalls on Sowerby Street have turned to grey porridge under their awnings. You will laugh, but I spent the morning at Halloran's clock stall, the one with the cracked glass canopy, waiting for him to fit a new pin into a carriage clock. He does not hurry for anyone, least of all the weather.

When he finally looked up, I told him we wanted the same thing twice. Ada had drawn it on the back of a receipt the night before: a triangle standing on its point, a ring fitted inside so that it touched all three sides, and one straight stroke cutting through the whole lot. Halloran squinted at the paper for a long while, then took two small brass blanks from a biscuit tin and said the line was the part people forgot. Without it, he said, you have only a shape. With it you have a direction.
Ada went quiet, then said yes, that was what we'd meant. We stood under the dripping canopy while he worked, and the rain ran off the brim of my hat in a neat curtain between us and the till. Afterwards he wrapped the blanks in newspaper and pressed them into our palms, warm from his thumbs.
Ada has already booked the artist on Shaw Lane for Saturday. She wants it done before the rain comes back, and I have told her that is not how rain works. Write soon, and tell me the sea is less grey where you are.
