Flat 14 and flat 15 shared a stairwell, a broken lift and a boiler that knocked like a bailiff, and the only thing the building had ever made easy was noise. She tapped the way her grandfather had taught her on the old radio in Leicester, short and long, then sat with a mug of tea going cold on the windowsill.

On the fourth night a reply came up through the concrete. Three short, a gap, two long. Then silence. She pressed her ear to the radiator and turned the rhythm over like a coin. It could be a question or an apology, and she had no way of telling which.

She copied the taps onto the back of a gas bill, dot for dash, and worked through the letters with a biro that kept skipping. It came out as a word after all. SORRY. Dev, she learned later, had been carrying a sofa up the wrong staircase and had thumped the wall in frustration. He had been tapping his own name ever since, in a code he only half remembered from a scout hut.

She knocked back the only word that seemed to fit. NOT YOUR FAULT. Then, after a long pause, she added the one thing she could spell without thinking. HELLO.

The answer came before the kettle had boiled. Two short, one long, and one more short, which was not a letter at all but a laugh, rapped out through eight inches of brick.
