Matching elephant and sunflower foot tattoos
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
Two matching tattoos sit on the top of a pair of bare feet, one on each foot. Each design shows a grey elephant with its trunk raised beneath a bare, branching tree with pink tips, above a cluster of yellow sunflowers and green leaves. The elephant is shaded in soft greys while the flowers and leaves use brighter colour, and the motifs are arranged neatly across the top of each foot.

The elephant had been walking the lane since before the bread van came, and by the time you reached the edge of the forest its trunk was already lifted toward the bare branches of the old ash that leans over the stile. You know the ash. Everyone in Coldharbour knows it, because it is the only tree in the valley that has never agreed to leaf, and the children say it is waiting for someone to ask it nicely.

So you ask it. You take the sunflowers from the seed tin on the windowsill, the ones your grandmother saved from the allotment, and you tie them with wool at the foot of the trunk where the elephant can reach them. Nothing happens for three days. On the fourth morning the tips of the twigs have gone the colour of raspberries, and the grey beast is standing beneath them with its ears folded back, looking pleased with itself in the way old animals do when they have finally been understood.
By August the flowers have turned their faces to the sun as if they had been told a secret, and the ash is full of small pink blossoms that fall into the elephant's wrinkles and stay there. The village will tell you it was the rain, or the new vicar, or the lad from the forge who came back from the war with a bad leg and a good hand for growing things. You will let them talk. You know what it cost, and you know the tree still pulls a little at the wool each evening, as if asking for the next one.
