Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two feet rest together against a white surface, each with a small black tattoo of an infinity symbol with an arrow passing through it. The linework is thin and even, with solid black fills on the arrowheads and fletching. The ink is uniformly black and the skin tone is natural, with soft lighting and the tattoos placed in a mirrored position.

At the Hollin Dance Hall, the fiddler Tam Ardley swore he would play until one of the pair sat down. Nobody ever sat down. The couple who came every Saturday moved as though one body had been cut in two and handed back, and the boards knew their steps better than the caller did.

Their grandfathers had been archers at the same butts, and when the old bowman Eli Marrow wagered that two arrows loosed together could never meet in the air, the girl, Brida, laughed and said the sky had room enough. She shot her arrow through the loop of an iron ring hung from the rafters. Her cousin Oswin shot his through the same ring from the other side. The ring had no end to it, so the arrows kept turning through it and never fell.

Years went by. Brida and Oswin married, bought a cottage at the edge of the moor, and nailed the ring above the door. Whenever one of them went to market or to sea, the other stood on the step and waited until the eight-shaped path of the ring had been walked twice in the mind. Only then could they go back to their work.

On the last Saturday the fiddler played a reel that would not stop, and the dancers kept on until the lamps guttered and dawn came grey through the windows. Tam Ardley swore afterwards that the iron ring above the cottage door had begun to hum. Nobody on the moor argued with him.
