Two matching fine line black tattoos on the inner wrists, each a continuous looping figure with the word love written in script.

Matching fine line love loops on wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms are shown side by side, each with a matching tattoo on the inner wrist. The design is a single continuous black line forming a small loop at the top, a looping figure, and the word love in cursive script. The linework is thin and even, and the ink sits on pale skin against a plain, softly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry was late again, so Morag Kerr and I sat on the harbour wall with a biro and the back of a seed catalogue, trying to write our names without lifting the pen. Nobody on Eilean Dubh could manage it. Her hand shook when she laughed, and mine was too quick, so every attempt snapped like wet string.

Her grandmother had a trick, she said. You didn't write the word first. You drew the thing that would hold it, a loop that never ended, and let the letters string themselves through it. We tried it. The loop at the top came out like a kettle spout, the body beneath it like a woman bending into the wind, and the word love ran along the bottom in a slant nobody had taught us.

When the boat finally came round the point, Morag folded the page and gave me the half with the figure on it. "You keep that. I'll keep the word." I asked why, and she said the word was the part that needed someone to read it back. That winter I took the ferry to Oban with the paper in my coat and found a woman in a narrow shop on Stafford Street who could copy a line exactly, and she did, twice, without once lifting her pen.

Back on the island the gulls were still arguing over the bins. I pressed my paper to the kitchen window and traced the loop with one finger, and for the length of a single crossing the figure and the word were the same unbroken line, and neither of us had to let go.
