Matching feather tattoos on two forearms

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two shaded feather designs sit on two forearms, one angled from the upper right and one from the lower left. Each feather has a central shaft and soft, layered barbs drawn with fine tonal gradients. The ink is black and grey against natural skin, with a green lawn blurred in the background.

The Crown Ballroom on Briggate smelled of wet wool and cheap pomade, and I had already danced three numbers with the same sailor when I noticed the feather on his forearm. It was shaded so softly, grey sliding into blue, that it looked like smoke caught under the lamps. "Where'd you get that?" I asked, and he said a back room in Chapeltown, and that the man there charged by the hour, not the inch.

Stanley Doyle was the sailor's name. He was a poor dancer and a worse liar, but he had good forearms and an honest laugh. We had a wager every Saturday: a shilling on who would tread on whose toes first. The loser bought the chips and the winner picked the next record. He lost more often than not, because he kept glancing at my arm, where a matching quill had been inked the week before, and forgot to watch his feet.

That night he lost outright, and when the band slowed for a waltz he pushed back his cuff and held his arm beside mine. Two feathers lay there, one above the other in the lamplight, the same angle, the same soft grey barbs. "Thought you'd want the pair," he said. "Only fair, seeing as you've been robbing me blind every week."

We danced the waltz without counting a single step. The chips went cold on the table by the door, and neither of us bothered to pay the shilling.
