Two shaded feathers on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows two feathers tattooed on the inner forearm, one upright and larger, the other smaller and angled toward the lower left. The quills are drawn with dark, defined lines while the barbs fade into soft grey shading that gives a feathery, delicate texture. The ink is entirely black and grey against pale skin, set on a plain light background.

The gulls have gone quiet since the Marigold came in short-handed, and you are the one nobody asked to mend the nets. Your father's hands have stiffened over the winter, so Dorothy Pyle hands you the bone needle and tells you to start at the cork line. Out past the breakwater the grey boats wallow at their moorings, and the wind carries the smell of tar and gutted mackerel up Fish Lane to the chapel steps.

The feathers turn up in the second week. A fulmar's, pale at the base and dark at the tip, is snarled in the mesh of the Ellen Kay's trawl, and then a smaller one, a gull's, catches on a knot near the lead line. You pull them free and tuck them into your jersey without thinking, the way a child keeps shells. Dorothy watches and says nothing, which is how you know she has seen you do it before.
On the morning the Marigold goes out again, her skipper, Tom Ansell, stops at the foot of the slip and holds out his palm. Two quills lie across it, their barbs soft and grey as weather. He says the sea gives back what it cannot keep, and you take them without answering. Watching the boat round the point, you realise you have been turning the feathers over the whole time, rubbing their quills between finger and thumb, and that the one you had thought lost has drifted back to you.
