Two mirrored tattoos sit side by side on the forearms. The left shows a teal hand holding a gold keyhole plaque strung with beads and a pink gem, while the right shows a peach hand gripping an ornate gold key wrapped in teal ribbon. Bold outlines, smooth shading and saturated teal, gold, pink and peach ink give the pair a bright, illustrative look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gate had rusted shut the summer their father stopped coming down the garden path, and nobody in Little Wenning had oiled it since. Marigold stood on the lane side with a paper bag of windfall plums going soft at the bottom, and watched her sister Nell work the old key through the iron bars from the inside, her gardening gloves slick with sap from the espaliered pear.

"It's not going to turn," Marigold said. "It hasn't turned since we were nine."

"Then hold the plate still and stop talking." Nell angled the key's bow against the keyhole, gold gone brown at the shoulders. Dew beaded along the brass plaque Marigold had wedged against the bars, and the pink glass gem in its centre caught the morning light like a drop of cordial.

The bolt gave with a sound like a knuckle cracking. Marigold felt it through the plate before she heard it, and Nell laughed in the sudden high way she used to laugh over burnt toast. The gate swung inward a foot, shedding flakes of rust onto the gravel, and beyond it the garden was a wreck of sweet peas run to seed and a bench with its paint blistered off.

Neither of them moved for a moment. Then Marigold tipped the plums through the gap onto the path, one by one, the way their father used to lay out fruit for the blackbirds, and stepped over them. Nell followed, and they left the gate standing open behind them for the first time in eleven years, so the lane could see in.
