Matching hands heart tattoos on thighs
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two people sit side by side showing matching fine line tattoos of two hands curved together to form a heart. The single black outlines are simple and even, with no shading, and each tattoo sits on the upper thigh. The image is sepia toned, with striped fabric on the left and a partly visible dark patterned garment on the right.

Sit down, the pair of you, and mind the gooseberries. Leave the hose where it is, it'll keep. You want to know how the Pryce girls kept the moths at their lamp the winter the squire shut the lane? Then hold still, because the whole trick of it is in the hands, and you'll not get it right if you fidget.

Ruth and Edie were twins, and their father hedged for the estate at Hollin Bottom, so they grew up with thorn scratches on their wrists and a lamp they were not supposed to light after dark. Every evening they pressed their palms together, bent their fingers down and curled the thumbs up until the two of them made a heart, and they held it against the whitewash so the shadow came out big as a barn door. The moths came to it. Folk said the girls had a way with things that fly.
Then the squire's wife decided Edie was too clever for a hedger's cottage and sent her to a school over in Tunbridge Wells, with a trunk, a grey coat and no say in it. Ruth stayed on at the window. Each night at nine she raised one hand against the glass, and across the valley, so the story goes, Edie raised the other against the dormitory pane, and the two of them made half a heart apiece, which is no heart at all. Nobody could see it but the owls.
Edie came home at Michaelmas with her coat let out and her hands gone red from the cold. The lane was dark and the gate still broken, but Ruth had the lamp lit already. They put their palms together under the glass and bent their fingers down, and the shadow filled the wall the way it always had, and the moths, which know a good shape when they see one, came in through the open door and settled on the sill as if they'd been invited.
