Three feet side by side, each with a fine-line black script tattoo of the word sisters beside a small outlined heart, placed on the ankle.

Matching heart and sisters script on three ankles

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Three bare feet rest on a shiny brown surface, each showing the word sisters in thin black script with a small outlined heart above the first letters. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The tattoos are placed close to the ankle and sit centrally in each frame, with nail polish visible on the toes.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Halcyon was nine days out of Falmouth when Ruth announced they were going to be ruined together. She said it over a tin of pilchards in the galley, swinging her legs off the bench, and Ada, who had counted the bunks twice that morning to be sure there were enough, put down her spoon. Mags said nothing. She had already seen the Porto shop's card pinned above the chart table, the one with the swallow and the anchor and the hand-lettered promise that the needles were clean.

The tattooist was a broad-shouldered woman called Dora who worked from a back room behind a ship chandler's, under a sign whose letters had faded to ghosts. She had a sheet of tracing paper and a steady, unhurried way of talking about the weather. Mags asked for the word in the same thin script their mother had used on jam labels and birthday cards, and Dora drew a small heart above the first letters without being asked, as though she had seen a hundred sisters walk in with the same idea and had long since stopped being surprised by them. The buzz of the machine filled the room. Ruth talked the whole time, and Ada, who had sworn she would not cry, did not cry once.

Back aboard, the swell had got up and the deck was slick with rain. Their father's old tins of peaches still rolled in the hold whenever the ship leaned, which was how they knew she was alive. Ada was the last down the gangplank that morning, and she stopped at the foot of it to look back at the wet planks. Three sets of prints lay there, one behind the other, the small heart on each sole pressed into the grain of the wood as the rain filled it in.
