Two bare feet with fine line black script tattoos on the inner sides reading because of them I give my all and because of her I will not fall, plus a small red rose on the left ankle.

Script quotes and a rose on two feet

Lettering · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

Two bare feet are shown from above, each with black script lettering running along the inner side from the ankle towards the toes. The left foot reads because of them I give my all, and the right foot reads because of her I will not fall, both in a thin, even hand-lettered line. A small rose with green leaves in red and green ink sits on the left ankle, and the photograph is taken against a patterned rug.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wire was strung between two chimneys over the Hessle Road fair that October, and Ada Stott had already counted the rungs of the ladder three times before her younger sister put a foot on the first one. Ruby did not look down. She looked at the chalk mark on the far chimney, the one their father had painted the summer he lost the use of his hands, and she began to walk.

Ada stayed at the foot of the ladder with the balancing pole held level against her chest, the way you hold a child who has fallen asleep. Every few steps Ruby called back a line she had learned from the Dutchman who ran the coconut shy, a quick rhyme about feet and breath, and Ada answered with the same words, because that was how the two of them had always kept the wind from taking them. Halfway across, the rope sang. A gust came off the water and Ruby's arms swung wide.

Ada did not run. Everyone had always told her that running was what finished people, so she stood still and shouted the only thing she could think of up into the grey: 'Because of you, I stay.' Her voice cracked on the last word. Ruby's weight settled over the wire like a gull deciding on a branch, and she took the next step.

When Ruby came down the ladder an hour later, her palms raw and her cheeks wet with rain, she found a ribbon knotted round the pole where Ada had left it. Tucked under the knot was a page torn from a fair programme, with a line written in pencil: I held the pole. You did the rest. Ruby kept that page in her coat for thirty years, and it was soft as cloth by the end.
