Matching heartbeat heart and Sisters tattoos on feet
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Three feet are shown, each with a matching tattoo of an outlined heart joined to a heartbeat line that runs into the script word Sisters. The linework is thin and even in black ink, with no shading or colour. The feet are photographed close up on a dark surface, with the tattoos sitting centrally in the frame.

Their father had gone down the Scarr shaft on a Monday and not come up on the Tuesday, and the three Pryce sisters, Nell, Agnes and little Bet, took it upon themselves to find the sound he had left behind. The old men at the Nook said a man's heart went on knocking in the rock for as long as he was owed a way out. So each night the sisters crept to the pithead on cold stones and pressed their soles to the iron grating, one after another, and listened.

Nothing came for a fortnight but water dripping and the winding wheel groaning. Then Bet, who was youngest and not yet trusted with the lamp, felt it through her heel: a knock, then a faint pull, then a knock again, the way a heart goes when it is frightened and trying to be brave. She told no one at first. She drew it in the damp dust with a nail, a small heart with a line running out of it like a thread, and beside it she wrote the one word she had copied from the schoolmaster's slate: SISTERS.
The others laughed until they felt it themselves. Nell set her ankle to the grate and went white. Agnes said it was only rats. Then all three scratched the same mark into their own feet with a sharpened pin and a thimble of soot, so that whichever way the rock turned, one of them would be standing on the knock. They walked the pithead every night for nine nights.
On the tenth night the cage came up with their father in it, grey with dust and blinking at the lamps, and he swore afterwards that three voices had called him up through the dark. Nell kept the line on her heel for the rest of her life. The knock, the old men say, still runs under the Nook, and it still counts out three.
