Matching sisters heartbeat tattoos on feet

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Three bare feet are shown from the side, each with the same small tattoo of an outlined heart joined to a heartbeat line that runs into the script word Sisters. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading, and the tattoos sit on the top of each foot near the ankle. The soft, slightly warm lighting and the dark floor behind the feet keep the focus on the designs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Holm Cross would dance with Ada Peele after the winter the river took the mill, so her sister Maud danced for both of them. Every Saturday at the Lantern Hall Maud went round the boards in her boots, and Ada sat on the bench by the stove counting the fiddle under her breath.

The fiddler, old Tobias Rook, had told them the story when they were girls. A heart drawn on two sisters keeps one time between them, so that when one runs the other feels the thump in her ankle. Their mother had laughed and inked the marks with soot and a darning needle. The marks faded, but Maud swore she could still feel hers when the fiddle quickened.

On the night of the frost fair the bench was empty when Maud looked up. Ada had gone out into the yard, where the ice on the millpond was singing under the lanterns. Maud stopped mid-reel. The floor was loud with stamping, but beneath it she felt a small, steady knock in her left ankle, slow, then slower, then nothing at all.

She ran. Ada was sitting on the frozen step with her hand pressed over her ankle, and she was smiling as if she had only just remembered how. "Keep going," Ada said. "I'm only resting the line." Maud went back in and danced until dawn, and every few bars the knock came up through the boards and kept her in time.
