Hetty Marr had the headphones clamped over her ears when the signal came through at four bells in the middle watch. Three ships had left Liverpool that week, and only one of them carried her sister. Dot, dash, dot, then a long pause, then the same pattern again, like someone tapping a glass to ask whether anyone was still awake.

She wrote it down word by word on the pad, the way their mother had taught them to take dictation from the parish clerk. ANCHOR HOLDS. SEE YOU IN HALIFAX. Beneath it the other operator kept sending a rhythm that was neither word nor code, long and short, rising to a spike and falling back again. The ship's surgeon had shown Hetty a cardiograph once, a paper roll unspooling from a brass drum, and how a heart drew itself as a line of peaks and troughs.

She sent back the word they had agreed on as girls, when the telegraph office was the only room where they could talk without their father reading over their shoulders. SISTERS. Then she tapped out the peaks herself, as neat as she could manage with cold fingers. The reply took so long that she began to fold the flimsy into quarters, and then it came: one word, and after it a small closed loop, the shape of a heart drawn at the end of a line.

Hetty pulled off the headphones, tucked the paper into her cuff and went out on deck, where the wind smelt of coal smoke and salt. Somewhere past the edge of the dark her sister was doing the same, and the sea between them kept its own steady rhythm, rising and falling like a line on paper.
