Two matching fine line black heartbeat tattoos with a heart and the words sister, one on lighter skin above and one on freckled skin below, on a forearm.

Matching heartbeat sister tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two near-identical tattoos sit on separate arms, each a thin black heartbeat line that forms a heart and carries lettering reading sister, with a shorter word before the heart on each. The linework is fine and even, with the lettering and heart outlined rather than shaded. The ink is black on skin tones, with the lower example on freckled skin and the upper on paler skin, and the composition is a tight horizontal crop.

The engine has a pulse you learn through the soles of your shoes before you learn anything else about a ship. On the Lerwick run it comes up through the galley deck every few seconds, steady as a clock, and you stop noticing it until the cook's knife misses a beat on the chopping board. You are nineteen and the youngest in the galley, so the sharpening and the potato peeling are yours, and nobody thinks to ask whether you mind.

Your sister Ailsa works the Aberdeen boat, and she writes the way other people send weather reports, short and blunt. The last letter came with a strip of paper torn from a ward monitor she had been covering, a wavering line of peaks and dips, and beside it in her cramped capitals: THIS ONE IS YOURS. You laughed in the walk-in fridge, then stopped, because the thing was harder to look at for long than it looked on paper.

Tonight the sea is flat and the galley is quiet. Mr Tennant, who has cooked on these boats since before the new engines, sees you turning the strip over in your hands and asks what you are grinning at. You tell him about the line that is a heart if you squint and a rope if you don't. He wipes his hands and says the old trick: count the ship's pulse against your own, and when the two agree the crossing is sound. You count. Your heart runs quick, the engine runs slow, and you let them drift apart and come back together like two people on a stair.

At four bells you fold the paper into your apron pocket and go up on deck. Somewhere past the lighthouse a boat is coming the other way, and you know without any signal that Ailsa is on it, tapping the rail with her ring finger in the same four-beat rhythm you are tapping on yours.
