Matching infinity heart with love script on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching tattoos sit on the inner wrists or lower forearms of two people, shown side by side. Each design is an infinity symbol that curves into a heart, with the word love written in a flowing script across the middle. The linework is thin, uniform and solid black, with no shading, and the photograph is set against a dark background.

Mae had been stitching the same seam for an hour when the bell over the loft door rang, and she knew from the sound it was Dilys, back early from Plymouth with the twine. Neither of them had said the thing aloud since the autumn, when their father's boat went out past the breakwater and did not come home, but the sisters had agreed on one small promise at the kitchen table: whatever the sea took, they would keep the knots tied.

Dilys dropped the coil on the bench and pushed back her hood. Her hands were raw from cold rope. "Harbourmaster says the Morwenna will be towed in by Sunday," she said. "Half her hull, he reckons. Nobody's sure about the rest."
Mae didn't answer. She took the marlinspike from its hook and went to the window, where a row of gulls stood on the slipway like old men waiting for the tide to speak. She thought about the drawing their mother had made years back, a loop that closed back on itself, a heart folded into the curve, and a word written through the middle in a hand that leaned forward as if running. "Forever," their mother had called it, laughing, sketching it on the back of a sailcloth invoice. "Or the nearest thing a rope can manage."
Dilys came and stood at her shoulder. Without speaking, they pushed up their sleeves and held their wrists side by side against the grey light, two identical marks in black ink, the loop and the heart and the word. Mae pressed her thumb over the curve of her sister's. "Sunday," she said. "Then we bring her in ourselves."
