Matching infinity heart with thick and thin
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching tattoos sit on the inner wrists, each showing an infinity loop that forms the outline of a heart. The words thick and thin are written in black script inside the heart, with the loop of the infinity symbol running through the lettering. The linework is bold and even in solid black ink, set against warm skin tones and a dark background.

The brush had to be loaded just so, Nessa said, or the stroke came out flat as a dropped pancake. Dot ignored her and dragged the sable down the board in one unbroken pull, leaning on the way down and lifting to a whisker on the way up. Fat, then thin. Fat, then thin. Their father had drilled it into them in the back room of the workshop on Dolphin Street until they could do it blindfold, and some mornings, when the tide was out and the gulls were quarrelling on the roof, they still did.

The commission that broke them was Mr Abbott's new chemist on the high street, gold leaf on black, FERRIS AND SON in letters a yard tall. Dot wanted the S because the S was where the show was. Nessa wanted the baseline, the quiet fat-thin rhythm that held the whole word up. They argued through three coats of size and one ruined board, and when the sign went up on a Tuesday the second S sat a fraction too close to the T. Neither of them said a word about it for eleven years.
When their father died, Nessa went through his drawer for the lease and found a card pinned under the ledger. On it, in pencil, was a figure eight folded into a heart, its loop running through two words written in both their hands: thick, thin. Dot had drawn it the week before she left for Glasgow, and he had kept it all this time, the way he kept everything that was done properly.
Nessa took the tin of black enamel from the shelf, dipped a fine brush, and went over the pencil line slowly, pressing down and lifting, until the loop closed on itself and there was nowhere left to start from.
