Matching infinity tattoos with feather and anchor

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

Two people stand side by side, seen from behind, each with a black ink tattoo on the upper back and shoulder blade. The left design shows a feather above an infinity symbol with the script words "I'll be the wings that keep your head in the clouds", and the right shows an anchor within an infinity symbol with "I'll be the anchor that keeps your feet on the ground". Bold black linework and lettering sit on warm skin against a dim, plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gulls had been screaming over Harrowgate Quay since before dawn, and Maud Tennant was still hauling the last pot of crab up the slipway when her sister came down the hill with a letter in one fist and her good shawl in the other. Ivy never walked anywhere fast unless something was wrong. She stopped at the bottom step and held the paper out without a word, and Maud saw the Admiralty stamp and understood that the Wren was gone, the boat with her name on it lost off the Dogger Bank in a squall nobody had seen coming.

They did not speak of it on the walk home. Ivy's husband had drowned the year before, and the two of them had long ago agreed between themselves that the sea took what it liked and gave back only what it pleased. At the cottage Maud sat down on the bench by the net loft and pulled her knees up, and Ivy sat beside her, close enough that their shoulders touched through two layers of wool.

"She always said I'd be the one to go up the rigging," Ivy said at last. "Said you'd be the one to keep me from doing it."

"She said a lot of things."

Maud reached over and took the ink pot from the windowsill, the one their mother had used for the ledgers, and she dipped the nib of her pen and drew a loop on the back of the letter, a long figure eight lying on its side. Then she drew a small feather rising from one curl of it, and then, below the other, a plain anchor. Ivy watched her do it and did not laugh, which was how Maud knew she had understood. When the ink dried they stood, and turned their backs to the window, and the light fell on their shoulders where the two of them had always leaned.
