Matching infinity tattoos with her and him

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are shown side by side, each with a black script infinity symbol. The word her sits inside the lower loop and him sits inside the upper loop. The linework is thin and even, with no shading and no colour, and the photo is taken close up against a plain light background.

Now sit still, the pair of you, and don't interrupt me the way your mam does. You want to know about Ada Rimmer and Tom Keogh, and I'll tell you, though the winding wheel at Hollin Drift was turning when they started and it's been scrapped these forty years. Tom drove the winding engine. Ada kept the lamp room, and every night she hung a brass check on a hook for every man who went down, and every morning she lifted them off again, and she never once got one wrong.

Tom had a habit of writing on the back of the rope tallies with a stub of carpenter's pencil. Figures for the men's weight, he said. But they were not figures. When the cage came up with the last shift he'd chalk a loop on the boards, the shape the rope made going round the drum and back down the shaft, eight lying on its side, never ending. Inside the bottom loop he wrote her name, and inside the top one his own. He said that was how the mine worked: you went down and came up and went down again, and the loop was the only thing that held.

One February the roof fell at the far heading and Tom was on the brake when the signal came. He didn't stop the wheel. He kept it turning, slow and steady, so the rescue cage could go down and bring up the last six men, and by morning he could hardly lift his hands off the lever. Ada found him on the pit-top bench with his palms raw and a ring of chalk on the boards beside him.

They say she took her own chalk and went over his loop, both names tight in the curves, so no one could tell which had been written first. Nobody could. That's the trick of it, my loves. Go on up to bed now, and mind the stairs.
