The lamp room at Coldharbour smells of paraffin and wet wool, and you are the one who fastens the strap under your brother's chin, because his fingers are still shaking from the cold. Davey is sixteen and has decided he is a man now. You let him believe it at the gate. Your own hands are steady, the way Mam's were when she shelled peas for the chapel teas and listened to the wireless for news of the strike.

Down the shaft the cage drops like a held breath. Nobody talks. Davey's elbow knocks yours in the dark and you feel him counting the seconds the way you used to count thunder over the hill. At the face the roof creaks and someone shouts, and you are already moving sideways, one arm across his chest and the other on the timber prop, as though you could hold up the whole mountain by sheer spite. Nothing falls. Nothing ever does on the days you are watching.

At the top, the gate man chalks the tallies and Davey asks why you always stand between him and the lift doors, like a sheepdog with one sheep. You tell him it is because the bell only rings for one of you at a time, and you would rather be the one it rings for.

That night, at the kitchen table, you take the stub of pencil from the rent book and write both your names small in the margin. Between them you draw the loop Mam once showed you, a figure of eight that goes out, round, and comes back to the same place. Davey peers over your shoulder and asks what it means. You tell him it is the whole promise, nothing more complicated than that.
