Matching key and heart lock wrist tattoos

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a tattoo. The upper wrist carries a shaded key with a dotted trail curving beneath it, and the lower wrist carries a heart-shaped lock with a matching dotted trail. Both designs use smooth grey shading and dark outlines against the skin, with a blurred red and white background behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The plums had been dropping for a week when Mab came up the orchard path and asked, for the third time that month, to borrow the key. Ada did not look up from the windfalls she was sorting into the basket. The key hung on a loop of grey ribbon round her neck, and it had not left her skin since the smith's widow pressed it into her hands at the lych gate.

"Tell it again, then," Mab said, sitting on the low wall. So Ada told it plainly, the way her mother had. A smith in the valley had made two things in one winter: a key with a bow shaped like a thorn leaf, and a heart-shaped lock for a box he meant to give the girl he loved. He pressed a trail of iron dots into the ground from his forge to her gate, so she would always know the way home from the orchard. Then he went to the wars, and he did not come back. The girl kept the key, the lock stayed on the box, and nobody opened it.

"What was in the box?" asked Mab. "Nothing," said Ada. "That was the point. Only the one who keeps the key decides what goes in it." She lifted the ribbon over her head and held the key out. Mab took it and walked down the trail of dark dots through the long grass to the cellar door at the bottom of the orchard, where the old heart lock hung rusted on its staple.

The key turned with a sound like a cough. Mab lifted the lid. Inside there was no gold and no letters, only the cool smell of cellar stone and the sweetness of apples stored too long. She closed the lid, left the key sitting in the lock, and walked back up the dotted path to fetch the basket.
