Key and heart padlock tattoos on hips

Other · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph is in black and white and shows two people from behind, each with a small tattoo on the hip or lower back. The left tattoo is a slender ornate key with scrolled bow and bit, and the right is a heart-shaped padlock decorated with filigree scrollwork. Both are solid black ink with fine outlines and no visible colour, and the framing is tight with a shirt and waistband visible at the edges.

The brass key came back to us in a pillowcase, wrapped round two shillings and a sprig of sea holly pressed flat as a letter. Mother held it up to the parlour window as though it might say which room it had come from. Number seven, we decided, because the Pryce sisters had been in number seven since Whitsun and had left on the Tuesday without a word, and I was the one sent up the stairs with a duster to look for them.

They had not gone far in their heads, only as far as the cliff path. I found Winifred's hairpins in the washstand dish and a pencilled list on the back of a tide table: bread, string, ask Mrs Hale about the padlock. Edie had always worn the key on a ribbon round her neck. Winifred had clipped the padlock to her cardigan at the chapel tea in June and laughed when the vicar asked whose heart it was. They had bought the pair from a stall on the pier, the sort of thing sold to girls who did not expect to be parted.

I carried the key down to the garden gate, where the heart-shaped lock still hung from the iron rail, its scrollwork furred with salt. Winifred had left it there on purpose, I was sure of it, the way you leave a coat on a hook so the owner will come back for it. The key slid in and turned with a click like a held breath let go.

Mother said we should not open things that were not ours. I said nothing. The gate swung out over the steps and the sea was loud beneath it. Somewhere down on the shingle Edie was walking with nothing at her throat, and I wondered which of them would be the first to say the word come back.
