Ada had counted the cards twice before the lamp guttered, and both times there were fifty-two, which was one more than the Kestrel's crew could account for. Tom Harrow slapped the table hard enough to rattle the tin mugs. "Deal, then, if you're so sure of your arithmetic."

She dealt. The galley of the Margaret Lowe smelled of fried herring and wet wool, and the stove ticked as it cooled. Outside, the North Sea shouldered against the hull in long grey hauls, and nobody mentioned the gale warning pinned by the hatch. Three hands in, Tom had won the rope, the boots and most of Ada's wages, and he was grinning like a boy who'd found a sixpence in the mud.

The fourth hand was the last. Ada turned her cards slowly. A queen of hearts, its corner soft from years in a sea-chest, and beneath it the king, the one card Tom had never once let her see him lose. She looked at him over the candle. He looked at the king. Neither of them spoke about the night in Scarborough when he had bet it against a Dutchman's brandy and walked home without it.

She laid the queen face up and pushed the rest of the pile across the table. "Keep your winnings," she said. "I only want the king back."

Tom's mouth opened, then closed. He reached inside his oilskin and slid out a folded square of card, creased and salt-bitten, and set it beside hers. Two hearts, side by side, as if they had never been parted at all.
