Matching heart and scroll ring tattoos
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two clasped hands, one lighter and one darker skinned, each show a small black heart with curling scrolls on the ring finger. The linework is smooth and of even weight, with the scrolls extending to either side of the heart. The plain black background keeps the focus on the tattoos, and the image is entirely black and grey.

The ship's rule was no sharp work below the waterline, which Nell took to mean we could do it in the chart room with the door bolted. We were three weeks out of Montevideo with a hold full of soya and a bosun who counted the biscuits twice a day. Off the Azores she sat me down under the lamp, pulled a sailmaker's needle from her kit bag, and asked if I could keep my hand still for a heart. I said I could keep my hand still for anything except her.

We worked the ink from a tin of Indian black the carpenter had been hoarding, thinned with a drop of fresh water from the galley tap. The first pass was a shaky mess that looked like a burnt crumb. The second was better. By the third I had the scrolls curling out either side the way the wake spreads behind a ship when the sea is flat, and Nell said it looked like a heart that had been left out in the weather and come back stronger. Four days later the bosun saw us at the rail with our hands on the rope, stared at our fingers, and said nothing, which from him was a blessing.
We came up the Humber on a grey morning with the tide pushing us in. A customs man in a yellow coat leaned out from his hut, read our papers, then looked at the rings on our fingers and asked whether we were married. Nell said not yet, and that the ink was a promise she was keeping in the meantime. He laughed and waved us through. The lines had settled into our skin by then, neat and even, the scrolls still curling away on either side as if the water were pulling them along toward the open sea.
