Matching lettering and star tattoos on two limbs

Lettering · Calf · Mixed · Photo

Two near-identical tattoos sit side by side, each with script lettering curving around a swirl of small and large yellow stars, a crescent moon and an orange and blue heart. The linework is dark and fairly crisp, with soft grey shading behind the swirl and moon. The composition is centred on each design, with the two pieces mirrored in size and position across the frame.

Dear Nell, the fog came down over the canal at half ten and by midnight the whole of Salford had gone the colour of weak tea. I'm writing this on the back of a spoiled delivery docket because the lamp by the loading bay is the only one that works, and the moon is hanging over the gasworks like a thumbnail clipping someone forgot to bin.

You'll remember the ceiling in Gran's back bedroom, the one we stuck with glow stars from the market until the paper went soft and the corners curled. You said ours were just a fuss of yellow with no sense to them. I told you they were going round the moon the way we used to go round Dad's kitchen table, always one more lap than was needed, and you didn't argue because you knew I was right.

Tonight a letter came down the belt with Gran's handwriting on it, postmarked 1998, addressed to a flat that's been knocked into flats three times since. The stamp was still stuck on crooked. Nobody on the shift wanted to be the one to bin it, so I've put it in my bag, and in the morning I'll walk it up to the hostel on Chapel Street and ask whoever's on the desk if they know a Nell.

I'm enclosing one of the glow stars. It's gone grey and it won't light up any more, but I thought you should have something from that ceiling that isn't in your head. Keep it somewhere the streetlight can't reach, and go out and look at the real moon when you can. Mine's over the gasworks. Yours is probably brighter, wherever you've landed.

Love, your stupid big sister, Jo
