Pooh and Piglet heart balloon tattoos

Calf · Colour · Photo

Two colour tattoos on separate legs show Winnie the Pooh holding a red heart-shaped balloon on the lower leg and Piglet holding a purple heart-shaped balloon on the ankle. Both characters have simple outlined linework with flat fills in orange, red, pink and purple, and each is accompanied by handwritten script reading "even if we're apart..." and "I'll always be with you." The pale bedding and denim cuff make a plain, light backdrop that keeps the focus on the two designs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tomas had been knotting string to the galley rail since half four, and by the time I came in with the flour sacks he had a red heart balloon bumping against the extractor fan. "It's from the chandler's," he said, as if that explained it. "Two quid for two. The other one's yours."

The purple one was smaller and kept sliding sideways along the ceiling pipes. I watched it drift over the bread bins while he explained, badly, that the Lerwick boat would take him on Monday and the rig work paid three times what the Hull trawlers did. He kept his hands in his pockets. I kept grinding oats that didn't need grinding.

"Four weeks on, four off," he said. "You'll be fine. You've got the galley and you've got Sprat." Sprat was the ship's cat and had no interest in either of us. I tied my string round the handle of the big pan drawer so the balloon wouldn't float off, and he tied his to the rail above his bunk, where it would glow faintly every time the lamp swung.

He sailed on the tide. By the second morning my balloon had sagged to the height of my shoulder, and when the swell came up the drawer handle rocked and the purple heart dipped and rose beside the kettle. I stood with the porridge spoon and waited for it to settle before I put the lid on the pot. Somewhere past the Fair Isle he would be looking up at his red one, and I would be looking at mine, and neither of us would say a word about it.
