Matching elephant pair with Like Mother and Like Daughter
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two matching elephant tattoos sit side by side on forearms, each with a trunk raised and script lettering running up beside it. The elephants are drawn in thin black outline with a small dot for the eye, and the script reads Like Daughter on one arm and Like Mother on the other. Small pink, blue and green swirls and dotted hearts add colour accents against the black linework.

On Marrow Cay the tide ran out so far that the mud shone like pewter, and every Tuesday my mother Odile walked the whole flat stretch down to the ferry slip. She told anyone who asked that the walk was for her knees. The ferry was the only thing on the island that went anywhere, and I was the one going.

I was nineteen and had a place at a mainland school for boatwrights, which in Odile's opinion was a polite way of drowning. She packed my bag with dried mango, three pairs of wool socks and a folded chart on which she had pencilled every rock where I used to fall in as a calf. We did not discuss the crossing. We discussed the socks.
On the last morning the gangplank clanked and I stood at the rail with the wind pulling my hair loose. Odile was a grey hump at the tideline. Then she lifted her trunk, slowly, the way she had when I was lost in the reeds as a child, and held it up like a question made of bone and muscle. I raised mine. Neither of us could make out the other's face, only the shape of the greeting.
The ferry cleared the sandbar. Behind us the spray off the harbour wall rose in small pale hearts that burst before they reached the gulls, and I understood that the boat was carrying me away but the greeting would stay on the shore, where it had always been kept.
