Matching love and infinity finger tattoos
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest with their fingers touching, and each shows a matching tattoo of the word love written in cursive script inside an infinity loop. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading, and the shallow focus softens the muted green background. The close framing centres the two tattoos and keeps the composition simple.

Nobody had warned me that Sandra would bring the sign. She unrolled it across two pub tables at the Crown on Tanner Street and weighed the corners down with pint glasses, and there it was: the cursive word I had painted for her in the sixth form art block, the summer the council wanted our mural gone before the inspectors came. I had done LOVE inside an infinity loop in gold leaf, and the gold had gone dull and brown in the twenty-six years it spent rolled in her loft.

Mr Pryce had let us stay late that week on the condition that nobody touched the turpentine. Sandra held the brush steady while I worked the tail of the final e, and we argued about whether the loop should be tight or loose. She won. I still think I was right, but the sign was hers in the end, and she kept saying so with her chin up, the way she did when she knew she was being stubborn for the fun of it.
Then she reached into her handbag and took out a second board, smaller, wrapped in a tea towel. She said we had agreed to swap them at the end of the year, and that she had been waiting a long time for me to ask where mine had gone. I had no answer. I had left Hastings for a job in Leeds the week after our exams and never once thought about the other half.
We laid the two boards side by side on the sticky table. The loops met where the gold had lifted, and the tails of the e's ran into one another as if they had been painted in the same stroke. Sandra laughed and the glasses rattled, and neither of us mentioned the years in between, though the loop, at least, had the decency to keep going round.
