The bus ticket is still in the biscuit tin. You'll remember the one, the number 9 to Harwick, where we tried to write the longest sign-off possible and you ran out of pen halfway through the second word. I finished it in red because it was the only biro left in Mum's handbag, and I've kept that red end ever since, the way you keep a splinter you can't be bothered to dig out.

The surveyors' office rang on Tuesday. They said the Ellery is due back from the shelf by March, and that you asked for the eastern transects, which nobody else wanted. I told the woman on the phone you'd always been the sort to go where the map ran out. She said that was in the file too, which made me laugh until I had to sit on the stairs.

Here is what I did with the afternoon. I sat at the kitchen table with the navy pen, the one that won't rub out, and tried to draw the sign without looking, the way we used to. The loop came out lopsided. I left it, because the words beside it had always gone the other way anyway, and it looked less like a joke than I'd expected.

Write when you can. Don't send the usual weather. Tell me what the sea looks like past the last buoy, and whether the gulls follow you out that far, because if they do I'd like to think of them keeping count for both of us.
