Two wrists with matching script tattoos, one reading to followed by an infinity symbol and the other reading and beyond with two small birds above it.

Matching infinity and beyond wrist tattoos

Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo

Two inner wrists are shown side by side. The left reads 'to' with an infinity symbol, and the right reads 'and beyond' with two small birds above the lettering. The thin, fluid linework is in blue ink, with the birds in red, and the soft, warm background keeps the focus on the two matching designs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are rubbing salt off the banister at the Marlow Guest House when the two girls come down the stairs at six, arguing about whether ink shows under a watch strap. Their names are Dolores and Bea, sisters from Bradford, and they booked the back room for a week in October because the sea was the only thing either of them had ever wanted to look at.

You walk them to the parlour above the chip shop on Front Road because you have nothing better to do with the morning, and because Bea has asked you to hold the umbrella. Bea wants the word to, with the loop of the infinity sign curling after it. Dolores wants and beyond, and she wants two swifts drawn small above the last letters, in red, because their nan kept a jar of red sealing wax on the windowsill and called the birds her messengers. The needle hums like a fridge. You watch the blue line settle on the skin, fine as cotton thread.

Back at the kitchen table they lay their wrists side by side, and the sentence only makes sense when you put the two halves together: to infinity, and beyond. Bea says it was a joke about the bus timetable. Dolores says it was not, and neither of them looks up from the teapot for a while.

On the Saturday train you carry their bags to the platform. The carriage window is still fogged from the inside when it pulls away, and above the level crossing two real swifts cut across the sky towards the harbour, going on without anyone asking them to.
