Matching 'to infinity' and 'and beyond' wrist tattoos
Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo
Two wrists are shown with palms angled towards the viewer, each carrying one part of a phrase in thin script. The left wrist has the word 'to' followed by an infinity symbol and two small dots, and the right wrist reads 'and beyond' in a flowing hand. The linework is fine and even in blue ink, with a small red accent on the final letters, against a soft, blurred pink and green background.

The officer at the booth turns your passport to the photograph, then to your face, then back to the photograph, as though one of you has been lying. Behind you the coach engine idles, and a child in the queue is counting aloud in French. You rehearsed the answers all the way from Lille: a friend, a week, back on Sunday. You did not rehearse the question he asks instead. 'And where will you be staying?'

You give him Nell's address above the bakery in Rouen, the one with the blue shutters she sent you in a photograph last March, the first thing she had ever sent without a joke attached. The two of you agreed years ago that whoever moved furthest away would send half a phrase, and the other would send the rest, so nobody could say the goodbye had been finished on one side alone. Hers arrived first, written on the back of a postcard of the Pont Corneille: 'to infinity', with two little dots she insisted were stars. Yours was always going to be 'and beyond'. You wrote it on a ferry ticket and carried it in your coat for months, until the paper went soft at the folds.
He stamps the page twice, which he does not need to do, and hands the passport back with one corner bent. 'Enjoy your visit,' he says, and then, because the queue is long and he has seen a hundred people cross with half a sentence in their pockets, 'mind the step on the far side.'
Nell is waiting past the barrier with her hand raised. When you reach her she does not say hello. She says 'and beyond', as if she has been holding the second half all week, and you laugh so hard the officer looks up from his screen.
