Matching love you more heart tattoos on feet
Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
Two feet wearing flip-flops show matching tattoos on the top of each foot. Each design uses black script lettering that reads love you more, framed by a black infinity loop with a solid red heart on the right. The lines are bold and clean, and the photo is taken from above on a grey pavement, with the red heart as the main colour accent.

The argument started over the last slice of seed cake, the way most of them did in our house, and by teatime it had grown into a matter of principle. Nell said she loved me more. I said that was impossible, because I had been loving her since the day Mam brought her home in a blanket the colour of weak tea, which gave me a head start, and a head start was a kind of cheating.

We ended every phone call that way after I left for the tugs at Greenock. Nell would say it first, quick and sharp, before the line could crackle dead. Love you more. I would answer with my mouth full of chips or my ears full of gulls, and it became a sort of contract, the way a lock gate is a contract with the water. Neither of us was ever going to be the one who gave up.
Last month a postcard came to the depot in her careful capitals. It showed the canal at Bowling, the towpath bent in the middle like a question. On the back she had drawn a loop that closed on itself, a heart tucked into the curve of it, and beneath that, in her looping hand: You're wrong, you know. I'm winning.
I sat in the wheelhouse with the engine ticking over and laughed until the deckhand came to check I hadn't gone overboard. Then I took out my pen, drew the loop back a little bigger, and wrote the only true thing I had. Still not. Love you more. I posted it on the way home, and we carried on the way we always had, both certain, both secretly glad to lose.
